One of the most important-though least known-components of an approved cancer
program is the Oncology Data Management and Cancer Registry
department which are required by the Commission on Cancer in order to maintain
an approved Cancer Program. AnMed Health's Cancer Program has
recently received accreditation from the American College of Surgeons'
Commission on Cancer with commendations until 2009. For information about their
cancer approvals program, S. C. Central Cancer Registry reports or The National

At AnMed Health, the Cancer Center Data Management
Registry team makes a significant contribution to the efforts to improve cancer
care. The department collects and maintains data on persons diagnosed with
cancer, and then uses the information to evaluate the success of specific
treatments and cancer prevention efforts. Statistical data is provided to the
National Cancer Database for research purposes and to the S.C. Central Cancer
Registry at DHEC for state-wide cancer incidence and mortality
surveillance.
Cancer history of patients is maintained from diagnosis
through lifetime follow-up or death. This includes information from symptoms to
cancer-related tests to diagnosis and treatment while strict internal and
external confidentiality measures are maintained.
The staff is also
responsible for organizing quarterly Cancer Committee meetings and weekly Cancer
Conferences. The cancer conference is made up of physicians, social workers,
nurses, counselors, pathologists, radiologists and others. The group meets every
Monday to discuss treatment plans for difficult or rare cases. Breast and
lung-specific conferences are also held.
