Clinical Pastoral Education

The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program at AnMed Health is designed to help clergy and laypersons develop skills in pastoral and spiritual care of individuals and families. CPE can be an integral part of preparing for:
  • professional chaplaincy
  • pastoral care in parish ministry
  • pastoral education
  • crisis counseling
AnMed Health's CPE program is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc., as approved by the U.S. Department of Education. AnMed Health offers three Level I CPE programs during the year: a summer unit and an extended unit each during the fall and spring. Tuition is $300 per unit — tuition assistance is available based on need.

Summer Unit

The summer unit is an 11-week program, beginning the first week in June and ending in mid-August. Students are expected to attend group educational classes on Monday and Tuesday which entails individual supervision, didactic seminars, verbatim seminars, reading seminars, theological reflection seminars, and interpersonal relationship group. Clinical time totaling at least 27 hours per week will satisfy the 300 hours of clinical time for the unit — students will be expected to complete one, 16 hour on-call shift each week as part of their 27 hours of clinical work.

Extended Unit

The extended unit is open to mature clergy and laypersons with the equivalent of one year of theological education expected. The extended unit covers topics including:
  • pastoral care competencies
  • end of life care
  • systems and multi-systems
  • cultural/religious diversity
  • spiritual assessments
Similar to the summer unit, the extended program in the fall and winter requires 400 hours to complete the unit — 100 hours of group/class time and 300 hours of clinical time. Students attend class from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Monday and spend the remainder of the time in clinical settings, interacting with patients, family and staff. Clinical hours are scheduled at student's convenience to accommodate students who often have other responsibilities but approximately 24 hours of week of clinical time is expected with at least one 16 hour on-call shift.

The program is designed to help students:
  • increase their ministry skills in pastoral care with patients, families and staff
  • increase self-awareness as ministers
