Pulmonary Rehabilitation

AnMed Health Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine - Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Changes in diet, exercise and smoking habits can make living and breathing easier. AnMed Health Pulmonary Rehabilitation is one of only five certified pulmonary rehab programs in South Carolina. Our expert staff helps people with lung disease make the kind of lifestyle changes they need to experience a lasting difference in life. The rehabilitation process is simple and is covered by most health plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.

Is Pulmonary Rehabilitation Right For You?

Any patient with lung disease can be referred to Pulmonary Rehabilitation by a physician. If you suffer from any of these illnesses, you may be a candidate for Pulmonary Rehabilitation:

  • COPD
  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Lung cancer
  • Obesity
  • Other restrictive lung diseases
Your doctor might also refer you to Pulmonary Rehabilitation if you’ve experienced the following symptoms:
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chronic cough
  • Too much mucus in the lungs
  • A cold that lasts for weeks
  • Weakness or very tired feeling
What to Expect

Pulmonary Rehabilitation includes supervised exercise training, breathing instruction, nutritional counseling and emotional support. Rehab sessions are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Each session lasts about two hours, which includes class time and exercise time.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation uses a number of tests to build strength in your lungs. This includes:
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX),
  • Exercise provocations,
  • Cardiopulmonary stress testing,
  • Pulmonary function testing,
  • Bronchial challenges
The program lasts four to six weeks, sometimes longer depending on your progress. When you finish the program, your referring physician and primary care doctor receive a letter acknowledging your completion.

Some patients enjoy working out with us so much they want to continue monitored exercise after they’ve completed the program. A self-pay wellness program is available for graduates of Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Getting Started

Potential patients will receive a call within two to three weeks after our office has received your doctor’s referral. After that initial call, you will be scheduled for an interview. Interviews are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Certain testing is required for Pulmonary Rehabilitation. If you have completed the following tests in the past six months, they will not be repeated:
  • complete pulmonary function test
  • arterial blood gas
  • chest x-ray
  • complete blood count
  • EKG
Check with your health insurance company to see if this program is covered by your plan. Our staff also calls to verify insurance coverage.
