Varian TrueBeam™ STx

AnMed Health - TrueBeam STxFighting cancer with the most advanced technology in South Carolina

AnMed Health is now home to the most advanced technology available in South Carolina for radiation therapy. The Varian TrueBeam™ STx system uses sophisticated 3D imaging to target and treat tumors of all shapes, sizes and locations with pinpoint accuracy. The system monitors and compensates for motion that occurs as the patient breathes in and out, resulting in highly precise treatment that protects healthy tissue. What's more, treatment times are dramatically reduced — in many cases, to only a matter of minutes. With enhanced capabilities to treat even the most challenging cases, AnMed Health's caring team of physicians and staff provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatment tailored to each patient.

In addition to its impressive technical specifications, TrueBeam STx has also been designed with patient comfort in mind. It operates quietly and has built-in music capabilities so the patient can listen to music during their treatment. Patients can be in constant contact with the therapist running the system, thanks to an enhanced communications system that enables constant interaction between the patient and therapist.
AnMed Health - TrueBeam STxRadiosurgery: Surgery without the knife

Radiosurgery is an effective treatment for many different types of cancer. TrueBeam STx uses sophisticated technology to deliver very precise and accurate beams of radiation to a tumor while minimizing exposure to nearby healthy tissue. There are two main types of radiosurgery: stereotactic radiosurgery (called SRS), which is for cancers in the brain and spinal region, and stereotactic body radiotherapy (also called SBRT), for cancers in other parts of the body. Both of these treatments are noninvasive — that is, the body isn't operated on in the traditional sense. It's surgery without the knife.

How does it work?

  • TrueBeam STx rotates around the patient to deliver a prescribed radiation dose from nearly any angle.
  • Precision is measured in increments of less than a millimeter.
  • TrueBeam STx uses 25% less X-ray dose than compared with earlier Varian image-guided technologies. This means patients can be exposed to less X-rays/radiation.
  • Real-time imaging tools allow clinicians to "see" the tumor they are about to treat. This gives them confidence, and they can target tumors with accuracy measured in millimeters.
  • The system includes a new "gated" option for synchronizing beam delivery with respiration. This helps maintain accuracy as the system changes its targeting whenever tumor motion is an issue, for example during lung cancer treatments.
  • A patented High-Intensity Mode can deliver dose rates that are twice as fast as the current technologies.
