The statistics are astounding. Unintentional injuries kill more than 830,000 children annually worldwide and permanently disable more. Since 1987, Safe Kids has contributed to a 51 percent reduction in the U.S. child fatality rate from unintentional injury. Safe Kids has distributed more than 2.5 million bicycle helmets, 250,000 smoke alarms and 510,000 car seats to families in need, and checked 1.4 million car seats.
Safe Kids Anderson County and its local partners are committed to preventing and eliminating unintentional injuries and deaths of children younger than 17. The AnMed Health Safe Kids initiative has received the Safe Kids Worldwide Campaign "Outstanding Lead Agency" Award.
Car seat inspections are one of the community programs offered through Safe Kids Anderson County. Jackie McCall, Safe Kids coordinator, also conducts child passenger safety discharge rounds on the Mother/Baby unit at AnMed Health Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Parents of newborns are provided in-room and in-vehicle instruction as well as guidance on the proper use and installation of their car seats. Car seats are also checked for recall history and expiration. This ensures a newborn’s first ride home will be a safe one. Check the current recall list from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to see if your child's car seat is safe.
