Support After Surgery

The amount of weight patients lose post surgery depends on many factors, such as:

  • age
  • weight before surgery
  • overall condition
  • surgical procedure
  • ability to exercise
  • commitment to maintaining dietary guidelines and other follow-up care
  • motivation

Clinical studies show that most gastric bypass patients lose weight rapidly and continue to do so for 18 to 24 months after surgery. Patients can lose 30 to 50 percent of their excess weight in the first six months and 70 percent of their excess weight within a year after surgery.

Patients who have adjustable gastric banding lose weight more slowly but over a longer period of time. Fifty percent of banding patients lose 50 percent of their excess weight within two to three years after surgery.

All of our patients go through follow-up tests every three to six months for the first year or so after surgery. After one to three years, patients return annually so we can watch for nutritional deficiencies and monitor their weight. Over time, you will need occasional checks to ensure your red blood cell count, vitamin B12 levels, folate levels and iron levels are healthy.
